Rename category[edit]

Can we rename the category Emperor Kammu to Emperor Kanmu? Because the spelling Kanmu is more accurate according to the Japanese spelling (かんむてんのう)-Artanisen (talk) 15:15, 1 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Deletions and user notifications[edit]

Thanks for the quick response and the notification of the user. At least the notification maybe should have done by me ... but when it comes to multiple copyvios I'm somewhat lacking AGF, but you handled it the proper way and I'll try to think about that next time too! Shouldn't the page be split? These are different editions. Ankry (talk) 15:12, 2 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Ankry: Ah yes. The older version had a bug, but it seems OK now. Yann (talk) 16:21, 2 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It seems my (failed) attempt to reupload fixed the metadata. Maybe, a good news. I will check other DjVu files. But IMO, it is still worth to separate the books, even if only one of them is processed in Wikisource. Ankry (talk) 19:10, 2 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How we will see unregistered users[edit]

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Hawaiian Division patch[edit]

Yann, Thank You for cntacting me.

Can you upload it for me the way its supposed to be done, this one, the Hawaiian Division is really only one of two images I want to add to a Wiki page. I did this because the one that was three was a completely wrong shoulder patch for this U.S. Army Division of the 1920s -1930s Photo came from Pinterest via the U.S. Miiltaria Forum I think. The other one I want to add is the 93rd Infantry Brigade their unit crest, this one came of of Worthpoint, and was sold long time ago, Worthpoint just saves images of everything from old sales to "Show" it's Worth.

Here's the other one, if you can add it the way it's supposed to be please. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Waspranger (talk • contribs) 09:48, 8 January 2022 (UTC) (UTC)[reply]

@Waspranger: Hi,
Please sign your messages with ~~~~.
There are 2 copyrights for each of your images: one for the picture, one for the badge design. For the later, it is probably OK as a work of a US governement employee. For the other, you need the formal written permission from the photographer. Please see COM:VRT for the procedure. Thanks, Yann (talk) 09:52, 8 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Happy New Year! As always at the beginning of the new year, I'm inviting you to share your most memorable shot of the past year. Which of your photos stood out in 2021? File:A Throw of Dice, 1929.webm[edit]

File:A Throw of Dice, 1929.webm has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

File:Sreelekha Mitra image.png[edit]

Hello, the file (now deleted) File:Sreelekha Mitra image.png was taken from a YouTube video, which was under the creative commons license, and the video was the creator's original work. The video URL was mentioned in the image. --Tito Dutta (talk) 11:03, 12 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Titodutta: Hi Tito,
How are you?
I restored the video, but I don't see a free license at the source. Did I miss something? Regards, Yann (talk) 11:12, 12 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How about writing to them? Did you check Internet Archive? You should always ask for a license review when you upload free content from outside Commons. Yann (talk) 12:13, 12 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Media of the Day[edit]

Just curious, but as you appear to be highly active in this field and notified me that there are quite a bit more MOTD files in the VPP thread, are the issues that were brought up several months ago (last year) still relevant to the MOTD system or have they now been addressed? As then a new discussion can be opened in light of the developments that have taken place since the discussion started and we simply ping everyone who voted in the previous discussion to see if they are persuaded by the new developments, as well as the three (3) separate new policies that were proposed (and accepted) to save the MOTD system. Please ping. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 12:23, 13 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I think that the MOTW proposal was on overreaction to some MOTD issues. Yes, some videos shown on MOTS were of poor quality. Some people questioned the idea to show videos of demonstrations against vaccination and vaccination pass. The Featured Media contest is effectively dead, so there is no chance that it would produce even enough Featured Media for MOTW. However there is no shortage of good and interesting free media, to be shown on MOTD. We need a bit more activity and diversity to fill up the empty days. I nearly filled up a whole month by myself. Deleted images of paintings by Nate Dunn[edit]

A number of images that I uploaded of paintings of Nate Dunn were deleted. Among the deleted files were the following ones:

I personally own every one of these paintings whose images were deleted from commons and the "Works" section of the Nate Dunn Wikipedia Page, including Abstract 1, Abstract 2, etc. and each painting clearly bears Nate Dunn's signature. The paintings were largely purchased from auction houses and many of the paintings could be identified from lists in catalogues. The comment on the deletion of the images from commons suggests that works are not from Nate Dunn but they definitely are his works. Can you please let me know what is required for these images to be allowed in commons and also what the correct Creative Commons Attribution would be ? I would like them to be undeleted or to be able to upload them again to creative commons with the correct attribution.

Thanks, eejjcc — Preceding unsigned comment added by Eejjcc (talk • contribs) 20:48, 13 January 2022 (UTC) (UTC)[reply]

@Eejjcc: Hi,
Please sign with ~~~~.
Paintigns by Nate Dunn are a priori not in the public domain (at least you need to prove that they were published before 1926, or without a copyright notice). Therefore a formal written permission from their copyright holder(s) is needed to host them on Commons. Please see COM:VRT for the procedure. Please read Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Nate Dunn. Regards, Yann (talk) 20:48, 13 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Commons:First steps[edit]

Apologies, didn't catch your ping before Commons:Village_pump/Archive/2021/12#Commons:First_steps was archived. Commons:Premiers pas is a redirect to Commons:First steps/fr, which is listed in the larger <languages /> at the top of the page. I intended to redirect or migrate more of the manually translated versions so that the second languages box could be eliminated, but decided to leave it after noticing the differences between Commons:Primeiros passos and Commons:First steps/pt.
